It seems that very few people have the heard the name of the band, yet their songs are often played at indie club nights etc.

They are in the style of many popular bands at the moment, playing a form of indie post punk pop!

The Futureheads

The Futureheads new single Skip To The End was released today.

There are two different 7" vinyl versions available.

One is a picture disc, but the other comes with a free signed poster!

Admitedly they are only signed by one member, and they all seem to be signed by the same person (which by the look of the signature is drummer Dave) although it may have just been a coincidence!

They are available now in most good record shops for just a pound or two!

Let us know if you have one which is signed by any of the other band members!

Bands Heading To Norwich

A couple new bands have been confirmed for Norwich worth mentioning:

Larrikin Love will be playing the Arts Centre on 3rd July. Tickets are £7.00.

Chicane are playing the Waterfront on 18th July. Tickets are £13.50. (Don't expect the venue to be upgraded though as the Lost Prophets are playing at the UEA on the same day)

NME New Music Tour 2006

UEA Norwich - May 18 2006

Four bands played on the NME New Music Tour.

The first band on were The Long Blondes who recently won the Philip Hall Radar award for best new band at the NME awards.
They played a good set which featured some good songs although the songs weren't too energetic and the crowd were fairly motionless. They appeared to be a band who would be better to listen to than watch live, although they played very well.

The second band on, iForward, Russia! were much more energetic and the crowd were obviously loving it, so much so that it almost turned into a riot!
The band played all the best songs from their debut album Give Me A Wall which had been released just days earlier.
The band again played very well and the frontman was perhaps slightly over-energetic and seemed to enjoy tying himself up with his microphone cable!

The third band to play were NME favourites the Automatic.
The audience seemed to really enjoy the band and most people were dancing or singing along to the singles Raul and Monster, although the other songs were not very catchy.
The band played fairly well, and although the audience seemed to be enjoying themselves, I was not too impressed.

This years headliners were Boy Kill Boy who, like last years headliners Maximo Park, combine guitars with keyboards to make a dancey, feel good sound.
The band performed very well and some of the songs were very good which resulted in a large amount of crowd surfing, but some of the songs were not as catchy.
The singer paused between songs at one point and announced to the audience that he had an important anouncement.
"They've just introduced to the Big Brother house a guy with tourettes".
Boy Kill Boy's new single Suzie was probably the best received song of the night. But, as someone wrote in this weeks NME, "Boy Kill Boy's hairdresser should be hunted down and punished". That is quite true.

Best band of the night?

Jose Gonzales

Singer/songwriter Jose Gonzales will be supporting Zero 7 when they visit the UEA next friday.

Sia and Fink will also be supporting the chill-out masters when they come to Norwich on 26-May.

Tickets are £16.00 and are on sale now.

Other bands confirmed for Norwich include the Lost Prophets (who sold out the UEA in 24 hours), local band Cord who are playing the waterfront in June, and the Kooks who will be coming to Norwich again - playing the UEA later in the year.

Mystery Jets + The Spinto Band

Norwich Waterfront - 08 May 2006

The Spinto Band were the first to grace the stage and played an eclectic mix of styles in a rather paraletic way. It's hard to describe - you really need to see them live to beleive it!

The American band did have member's who looked like they once stared in Channel 4's Peep Show but they probably didn't.

They played a good set which included their singles Mandy and Brown Boxes (which involved Kazzoo's!), and seemed generally appreciative to be playing in Norwich!

When the Mystery Jets came to the stage, singer Blaine declared that he had "never been to Norwich before" but he "really liked it" before a fellow band mate pointed out that the band had been to Norwich just months earlier as a part of the NME tour.

The band played most of their album and all their singles including the popular Can't Fool Me Dennis and all the songs were really appreciated by the slightly hyperactive audience, who even jumped about to the bands new material.

The evening on a whole was very enjoyable and the bands played very well.

I would suggest that both bands are set for big things in the UK!

The Zutons + Larrikin Love

Sheffield Octagon - 04 May 2006

Sheffield's Octagon is a fairly large venue in central Sheffield. It is, as the name suggests, fairly octagonal in shape.

Larrikin Love were the first band to face this large crowd. This band could potentially have the worst hair to appear in the NME since Boy Kill Boy.
The band are have received a large amount of support from the NME, and did play well, but the songs were not terribly catchy.

The Zutons are well known for their live performances, and also for their support bands who often become quite popular (on their last tour they were supported by the Futureheads).
The band did not disappoint!
They played a good mix between old and new material including all their singles.
Their set was fairly long which gave them the chance to play most of the songs from both of their albums.
The Zutons were obviously appreciated by the audience and most of the crowd joined in during the main songs.

Overall a very good gig and I am looking forward to seeing the Zutons again!

Bands Confirmed For Norwich

Insomniac's Ball heroes Battle are appearing at the Norwich Arts Centre on 05 June 2006.
Tickets cost £7.00 (advance - more on the door), but there will be stiff competition, as on the same day the Futureheads are playing at the UEA, and Orson are playing the Waterfront.

17 June 2006 sees singer/songwriter Joan As Policewoman visiting the Arts Centre. Tickets are £6.00.

NME sweethearts the Automatic will be playing the the Waterfront on 12 July 2006, their 4th visit to Norwich, after supporting the Ordinary Boys, The Kooks and playing the upcoming NME show. Tickets are £7.50.

Tickets for Nerina Pallot at the Arts Centre, and We Are Scientists at the UEA have now sold out.

We Are Scientists, the only American band on this year's NME Awards Tour, are to play the Norwich UEA on 20 October 2006, according to the NME.

This is quite some time in the future, and details are not yet on the UEA's website, but if everything goes to plan it should be shortly, so click HERE to check.

We Are Scientists have not had any new releases out this week.
However, the following artists have:

The Arctic Monkeys release their new EP, Who The F**k Are The Arctic Monkeys? On CD and 10" record. It features 5 songs, most of which are new, and will set you back £3.99.

The Raconteurs release their single Steady As She Goes on CD and 2 x 7". It was previously limited to just 1000 copies and they all sold very quickly!

Dirty Pretty Things have released Bang Bang You're Dead on CD, DVD and gatefold 7".

Funny Video Clip

Breaks Co-op

Radio One DJ and MTV2 presenter Zane Lowe's band Breaks Co-op is coming to Norwich in May.

The band, which also features Hamish Clark, star of TV's Monarch of the Glen, will be supporting critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Nerina Pallot at the Norwich Arts Centre on 31 May 2006.

Stacs Of Stamina

Stacs of Stamina are a new band with hip hop and electro influences.

Although fairly unknown, they did appear on Clash magazine's One's To Watch In 2006 CD.

I would suggest watching out for this band, as they should be a big name on the hip hop scene by the end of the year.

The song I would most recommend is Tivoli, so if you can find it, give it a listen!

This Week

This week has seen new releases from The Vines and The Zutons, among others . . .

However, a particularly interesting release this week is the Transgressive Records Singles Collection.

Transgressive are a record label in the same vein as Fierce Panda, ie: they specialise in small unknown bands who usually up-and-leave them for a major label once they have have had a hit single.

This CD features the following bands:

The Subways
Ladyfuzz
burningpilot
Mystery Jets
The Pipettes (as seen at the Insomniac's Ball)
The Rakes
and Bloc Party

The album features more than one track from most bands, and the bonus DVD features the usual videos and live tracks. However, other artists can be found on the DVD who are not on the CD, including:

The Young Knives
Larrikin Love
and Battle (also seen at the Insomniac's Ball).

All in all, this should be a pretty decent collection, and can usually be bought for just over a tenner.

It's Official

The Cooper Temple Clause are better off without bassist Didz Hammond.

Or maybe it's just the extra publicity they gained as Didz left them to join Carl Barat's new band Dirty Pretty Things?

Either way, last year the Cooper Temple Clause played a gig in Norwich at the smallest venue, the Arts Centre, which did not sell out.

Now, they have just announced a full UK tour, which will visit Norwich again, this time playing the Waterfront, which is a much larger venue.

So there we go . . .

The Insomniac's Ball

Is it a coincidence that in the same year as England introduces a 24 hour drinking law thing, that the first ever Insomniac's Ball takes place?

The gig was a 10 hour epic (from 8pm on the thursday 'til 6am on the friday) and featured 5 rooms and many bands and DJ's.

Most of the bands who played were new bands, and several have been mentioned on this website previously. It was nice to see some of music on t'internet's favourite bands getting the recognition they deserve.

Obviously I can only comment on the band's I saw . . .

First off, we saw the Pippettes. They are a band who have 3 female singers, who did seem to be more concerned that they were doing the correct dance moves than singing the right notes. However, they weren't bad, none of the bands I saw were.

Second were the Rifles. They looked like Oasis and sounded like the Jam. They were one of the surprisingly good bands of the night, and are definitely a band to watch out for this summer. Their song Local Boy was very well received by the crowd and lots of crowd surfing resulted.

Next was Battle. They were really good live, and their song Tendency was one of my highlights of the evening. Battle were one of the best bands on the night and I would be willing to bet that they will be serious contenders for band of the year.

I saw Mando Diao next, who were not bad and they played well, but the songs were not particularly catchy. They were one of the most experienced bands on the bill, yet I can't really see this gig making them much more popular.

Music On T'Internet favourites Vincent Vincent and the Villains were next on the new band stage. They are quite big in London, yet not so in the rest of the country.
The room in which they played was very small capacity, probably only a few hundred, but the songs were well received, and their last song, Jonny Two Bands led to a stage invasion!
It looks like this band are on their way to the top.

British Sea Power was next. I didn't catch all of this gig, and to be honest I'm not a huge fan, but the songs I saw were surprisingly good and catchy. One of the bigger names on the bill and this was reflected in the size of the audience.

Art Brut were the final band of the night and were probably the best. They played all their best songs and frontman Eddie Argos interacted with the band superbly.
They were also hillarious, with Argos comparing their poor sound after the first song to The Jesus and Mary Chain, and then asked if their was a "sound engineer in the house, and if so, can he please do his job".
The gig was fairly incident prone with guitarist Jasper's guitar only occasionally working, which Argos attributed to the fact that he had damaged it himself to keep the up the bands "unproffessionality".
The band previewed a few new songs before giving in to the audiences pleas and played hit single Emily Kane, although Argos informed us that the girl in question had, in fact, rung him since the song was released.
Art Brut were one of the best bands I have ever seen.

Overall the evening was thoroughly enjoyable and very tiring.

However, my only gripe is the cost of refreshments.
A Twix was £1.00,
a can of Stella would set you back £4.50
a bottle of small brand beer was £3.50
a small bottle of water was £2.50
and a small Vodka and Red Bull would cost you a whopping £7.00.

Bearing in mind that the gig ticket was only £20.00 (or £60.00 for a VIP ticket!) the refreshment prices were ridiculous!

But, apart from that, brilliant.

Bearsuit + Monkey Swallows The Universe + The Aprons

Norwich Arts Centre - Monday 10th April 2006

(Yeah I know it's a bit late - it's been a busy week!)

Bearsuit are a local(ish) band - they're from Bury St Edmunds - who have released at least 2 proper albums and had support from the late great John Peel, yet they still struggle to sell out Norwich's smallest proper venue (the capacity of which is about 300).

The Aprons came on first - a lead female singer, a backing female singer who held a tamborine, a guitarist and a drummer. Yes, there was no bassist.
The songs were very shouty in a Be Your Own PET sort of way, yet they were not terribly tuneful.
I couldn't help but think that had the singers not been attactive females, they would not have been well received. As it happens they were (attractive females and well received).

The second band who took to the stage were Monkey Swallows The Universe, who were less like Bearsuit than their name suggests.
They had a female singer who had an acoustic guitar, and sounded quite like KT Tunstall.
They also had a celloist (I think that's how it is spelt . . .) so they were not particularly conventional.
This band were about as different to the first band as could possibly be. They played very relaxing, slow, folk pop which was again received surprisingly well by the audience.

Bearsuit came on slightly behind schedule but played a very good set.
For some reason or other they were playing in front of a backdrop of scenes from a sci-fi film (which may have been 2001 A Space Odyssey which was projected onto the wall behind them).
The male singer/guitarist from the band knew a worrying amount about sci-fi and told us several anecdotes and facts about various classic films!
The band were very good and played all their best songs, finishing on what is probably their most famous song Itsuko Got Married, shortly after the 11.00 curfew. However, the audience wanted an encore so the band had to give them one. They came back on stage and asked the audience what they wanted to hear.
After a few "Err, we can't remember how to play that one" 's, the band launched into the fan favourite Hey Charlie, Hey Chuck.

All-in-all an enjoyable night with a wide variety of different music on offer!

The Futureheads

Have just confirmed a date at the UEA in Norwich.

The tour will be to promote the Jam-esque band's new album.

They will visit the university on 05 June 2006. Tickets are £12.50.

Mr S has a date at the UEA on the 17 May 2006. Ticket price is £10.00 (£8.50 NUS).

Cord

As I mentioned earlier, Cord have a new single - their proper debut - out today called Go Either Way. And it's rather good.

Incase you are unaware, they are a band from Norwich who have recently signed a multi album deal with the huge Island records.

The picture on the sleeve of the single is of a person dressed as a manequin, standing on Gentlemens Walk in Norwich!

And it looks rather good!

Yes, chart history was made yesterday as Gnarls Barkley's single Crazy was the first single to reach number one in the singles charts purely on download sales alone!

The CD was released in shops today.

Chart History?

It is likely that chart history will be made today if Gnarls Barkley tops the singles chart.

His song Crazy could be the first ever to make the number one spot purely on download sales (although it is only recently that downloads have been counted without the single being released on a physical format simultaneously!).

The official chart results will be announced tonight.

Blur

According to the NME, Blur have just confirmed that they are to reform and make a new album.

Bassist Alex James told the magazine that they wanted to make a "dirty, nasty, filthy" record.

However, there is not even the slightest hint at this on Blur's official website blur.co.uk

It is also not clear whether guitarist Graham Coxon will be rejoining.

Some more bands worth checking out:

The Rifles - they sound like the Jam and make a really wholesome sound.

Could be dark horses in the "who will be biggest this year" race.

Louie - the newest band to hitch a ride on the post Libertines wake.I can't really see them becoming particularly popular - but they're not the worst band to appear in the NME recently!

The Fratellis (yes that is how you spell it!) - sound very much like the Libertines. Their new single "Creeping Up The Back" will chart very highly - watch out for it!

Radio One have just released one called Best Of Unsigned which features great new bands discovered by Radio One DJ's.

The episode currently available for download features a band called Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly and with a name like that, they can't really fail to go far!

More New Music

I would like to tell you about two new bands, one doesn't have a proper label in the UK and they have to sell CDs through their website.
The other will probably be the "next big thing" in British 'indie' music, so watch out for them!

The former, Darlings Of The Day (who have appeared briefly on this site before) have no real label to speak of. They are a two part male/female American/British band who sound not unlike The White Stripes, The Dandy Warhols, The Kills and Louie XIV.
I really like this band and I know that if they could be promoted efficiently and get their songs across to a wider audience then they could become really quite big!

The second band I will tell you of are Battle who, despite never yet charting and having released only a handful of singles have become a buzz word with music industry insiders.
They sound like the modern face of British indie music with elements of Editors, The Arctic Monkeys and even Feeder.

I would be willing to suggest that this band will become very big.

Band Banned

New Scandinavian band the Modern have been disqualified from the UK singles chart this week as too many copies of the single were bought by one person!

Keyboard player Chi Tudor Hart's father bought just under 150 copies of the single Industry online, apparently to give to friends and family.

Whether this was set-up or not, this publicity has surely done more for the band than one play on the Chart Show . . . although the single was due to enter the charts at number 13!

This weeks Chart Show on radio one will be presented by Tim Westwood and Scott Mills.

NME New Music Tour

Not to be confused with the NME Awards Tour . . .

The New Music Express, not content with running one annual tour of the UK's largest cities, they have recently started running a second, slightly less popular tour. (By less popular, I mean it is actually possible to get tickets without using eBay).

And, incase you haven't already guessed where this is going, the NME New Music Tour for 2006 has just been anounced.

Last year, this tour discovered bands including Maximo Park and The Cribs.

The bands featuring on this years tour are:

Boy Kill Boy
The Automatic
iForward Russia!
The Long Blondes (winners of the Phillip Hall Radar award for new music at this years NME awards).

The gig will visit 14 venues in total (however the first 3 will not feature the Long Blondes, and the Sheffield gig will be missed by iForward Russia!).

The jaunt reaches Norwich UEA on 18th May 2006.

The Buzzcocks + Gear

The Waterfront - Norwich - Monday 13th March 2006

I would like to start by pointing out the irony that I missed the first in a new series of Never Mind The Buzzcocks on the BBC, to watch the Buzzcocks . . .

The Buzzcocks are a highly influential British punk band who helped make the 70's infamous.

They are probably most famous for their song Ever Fallen In Love (With Somebody You Shouldn't've)? which has recently been covered as a charity single in memory of John Peel.

Gear came to the stage and opened with a very good song. The singer looked very much like Placebo's Brian Molko and the song could easily have been one of Placebo's heavier numbers.
The second song was also good, slightly quicker and catchier, but unfortunately that was as good as it got.
Before the third song was played, the singer introduced it as "our new single" but it started to go downhill when the bassist brought out an electric drill to use as an instrument.

The rest of the band's set passed without any real joy. A few songs got the (surprisingly young) crowd bouncing, but even the song which was "(Buzzcocks frontman) Pete Shelley's favourite" wasn't particularly good.

The band eventually left the stage and the lights brightened again.

I was surprised to see that less than 50% of the crowd would have been able to remember the Buzzcocks from their hey day.

Most of the crowd were school kids, most wearing t-shirts advertising their favourite American punk rock band.
I was surprised to see only one person with a proper mo-hawk, although I did see one person with a space-age, hi-tech belt with words flashing across on it. If that's not rock'n'roll, I don't know what is.

Then the Buzzcocks came on, the band in various stages of decay. Slightly less spritely, slightly rounder and with slightly less hair than before.

I couldn't help but admire the vigour with which they launched into the first song, taken from their new album Flat Packed Philosophy, considering they are nearing retirement age.

OK, so punk songs are typically short, but the Buzzcocks were on the stage for an hour and a half, bearly pausing for breath between each song. The encore alone had 9 or 10 songs!

Many of the songs were unfortunately what can only be described as mediocre. Most of the songs sounded far too similar, and only a few were memorable or catchy.

The crowd started jumping to a few songs, presumably early singles, although it was particularly hard to distinguish between the songs as the Waterfront is famous for its poor PA system which is always far too loud for the small venue and regularly distorts.

The song that really got the crowd jumping, dancing and singing along was Ever Fallen In Love . . . ? which was the penultimate song of the encore.

The set ended and the crowd streamed out.

In all, it was a gig with very few surprises, and although there were some good points, I was still disappointed with the lack of stage diving from the headlining band . . .

Dirty Pretty Things + Humanzi + Metro Riots

28 Feb 06 - The Waterfront - Norwich

Dirty Pretty Things are the "other half" of the Libertines.
The other half that are not members of Babyshambles or Yeti.

Singer Carl Barat was a frontman in the Libs and drummer Gary Powell was the drummer.

But they are not the Libertines, and they want to make that clear.

The doors were at 7.30, however, people were turning up about half an hour early. Unfortunately, the doors didn't open at 7.30, they were about 15 minutes late. Normally this would not be a problem, but it was snowing, and as is often the case when it is snowing, it was bitterly cold.

However, to put us out of our misery, two band members, Gary and Didz appeared and started signing autographs and having photos taken with fans.
Which was nice.

Eventually, everyone was in from the cold and the first band - which we believed to be Humanzi - came on.
They played a fairly good set with material which could easily have been raided from the bins 'round the back of the Libertines studios.

I should point out that the frontman appeared to be wearing mascara.

The other guitarist/singer however played particularly well and could also sing.

Lots of the bands songs were fairly catchy and lots of them were "about chavs".

I feel this band could "go far".

The second band of the evening came on, and as they did, I heard some one shout "Oh my gosh it's Carl", at which point the band announced themselves in their thick Scottish accents to be Humanzi. Only at this point did I realise that the first band of the night probably weren't Humanzi and were in fact Metro Riots. (Surely Retro Riots would be a better name?)

This band also sounded like they may have been playing lesser known Libertines numbers, but just weren't as good as Metro Riots.

Eventually it was time for Dirty Pretty Things.

As the band came on, the crowd erupted into tumultuous applause.

The band launched into their opening song Deadwood (which they also played on their first television appearance at the NME Awards).

A few songs later the band played Death On The Stairs, a classic Libertines track, from their debut album Up The Bracket. This was greeted with a loud cheer from the crowd, and most of the audience sang along.

You would be wrong to think that frontman Carl was the most popular band member, as on several occassions the words "Gary, Gary" could be heard chanted from the back of the room.

The last track of the set was their new single Bang Bang, You're Dead which is due to be released shortly.

The band came back on to play a two song encore which started with Carl playing solo on the acoustic track France (which is a bonus track on the Libertines self titled album) and ended with the popular I Get Along which appears on both Up The Bracket and the I Get Along E.P.

Insomniac's Ball

The Insomniac's Ball is a new "festival" which will be held for the first time in London in April.

It runs from 8pm one evening to 6am the following morning in London's biggest night club seOne.

Bands already confirmed include:

And singer Keith accepted the Arctic Monkey's Brit Award pretending to be the singer!

So, their new single, It's A Hit will surely do fairly well this week.

However . . . it's another fairly slow week for new releases.
But then, it is february. Records don't generally sell well at this early time of year - except for the Arctic Monkeys . . .

Corrine Bailey Rae - Put Your Records On - well, she is supposed to be the next fairly big thing.

Maximo Park - I Want You To Stay - definitely one of the best off their excellent debut album.
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - M.J. is re-releasing all of his singles, one a week, just like Elvis did last year. This is the first of the collection.
Madonna - Sorry - another disco track from Madonna's new album. She claims to have been influenced by Goldfrapp.

The Streets + The Mitchell Brothers + Professor Green

The Streets are a very popular British hip hop outfit, which is basically the work of music genius Mike Skinner.
The other bands on the bill are signed to Mike Skinner's new label The Beats.

Professor Green came to the stage with another rapper and a DJ. They all seemed to play an equally important part in the performance, yet only Professor Green's name appeared on the bill.
Although Professor Green wasn't bad, the songs were not very catchy, and therefore the audience were not terribly appreciative.

The Mitchell Brothers were much better. They are obviously very appreciated on the British hip hop circuit and some of their singles got the most applause of the night.
The two "brothers" performed very well and had the 'comedy' factor that the Streets are famous for!

When Mike Skinner - aka The Streets - reached the stage, his greeting was barely audible above the applause. He, like Professor Green, featured a second singer and DJ. They perfomed very well and played many of their famous previous songs intertwined nicely with a selection of new tracks.
Probably the best response was to that of the bands first song Don't Mug Yourself which introduced Skinner to the world. Other popular tracks on the night were Let's Push Things Forward and Same Old Thing from their debut album Original Pirate Material, as well as Blinded By The Lights and Dry Your Eyes from the bands critically acclaimed second album A Grand Don't Come For Free.

Overall, it was a good gig, although The Streets just managed to steal the show from the talented Mitchell Brothers who are surely destined for big things. Watch out for them!

T In The Park

Voted "Britain's favourite festival", the Scottish T In The Park announced the line up for this July's event this afternoon.

The headliner for the Saturday is the giant Red Hot Chili Peppers. Sunday will feature legends The Who.

Q Magazine are making a list of the 100 greatest songs for one of their future magazines. However, unlike some English music magazines, they want the readers to vote for the songs, rather than choosing for us!

The Raconteurs

Although the name may be new, the band features familiar faces including:
Jack White (of White Stripes fame)
and Brendan Benson (a singer/songwriter who is quite popular with Radio Two!)

The band have recently released their debut single, Steady As She Goes backed with Store Bought Bones. This was only released on a limited edition run of 7" (only 1,000 were released world wide).
As a result of this, only a few made it on to shop shelves in Britain and it appears that most of these were bought by eager collectors. If you have a copy, I would like to point you in the direction of eBay, where the single is selling in excess of £50 (quite good going considering it hasn't yet been on sale for 2 weeks!).

The single, which can be heard on the bands excellent website, features Benson singing lead and White singing backing vocals, and the two guitars contrast with each other nicely. However, on the B side, the musicians roles are reversed.

The two musicians come from different backgrounds. Most people will be fairly familiar with the White Stripes' 'garage rock' sound, but Brendan Benson's music is very poppy, and similar in places to bands such as Blur and Stereophonics. However, these differences compliment each to make a punky, yet poppy sound.

I think the band will become quite popular with the public, and will not just be considered as "Jack White's Side Project".

NME . co . uk is the website for the worlds best selling weekly music magazine. The website is as good as the magazine! (And is updated regularly)

Myspace . com is the new buzzword in the music industry. Almost every band has a page here! Rupert Murdoch has recently purchased the site for millions of dollars!

Wikipedia . org is an online encyclopaedia. It has almost everything on there! Even obscure bands!

Everyhit . com does exactly what it says in the address bar! It has a record of every single which has reached the top 40 and a good search function. It also has a page of interesting facts!

Eil . com features almost every CD, Record, Music DVD and all other music merchandise in existence! They are often quite expensive, but you get what you pay for!

Shockwaves NME Awards Tour

The annual NME tour reached Norwich last night, but from the very start, the tour had been shrouded in controversy.
The tickets for the gig went on sale through the NME's website before they actually supposed to, and the majority of these were immediately snapped up by ticket 'touts'.
The UEA (University of East Anglia) box office announced that they would only sell tickets to UEA students with a campus card, and then, only one per customer. This was presumably an attempt to stop people buying tickets to sell, but it infuriated regular customers who did not study at the university.
As a result of this, and despite all attempts to combat it, tickets were selling on eBay for up to £120 a pair.

For those lucky enough to acquire tickets, the atmosphere was quite intense. The sets were kept to a very tight schedule, each band appearing at the set time, playing for about 30-45 minutes, and then leaving, at which time the roadies would rush around and get the next band sorted out.

The first band to appear were the Mystery Jets.
The band were different from the others as their is a definite progressive element to their music.
An interesting fact about the band is that it features two generations of a family - Father (guitar/percussion) and Son (vocals/percussion).
I was not really sure what to expect from these, as they were the only band on the bill yet to release an album (their debut is due to be released in March). However, I was very pleasantly surprised, as they band performed really well, and gave possibly the best performance of the night.

Recently at NME tours, it has been the opening band of the night who have traditionally been most succesful the following year. Last year the Kaiser Chiefs were first band on, and in previous years, opening bands have included Franz Ferdinand and Coldplay.

The second band were the American We Are Scientists.
This three piece were the first to really get the crowd going with their two catchy singles, Great Escape and It's A Hit.
Although the band played well, their album is not hugely popular, and as a result, the crowd did not know many of the songs. This, however, did not deter the band, and they even attempted some American humour between the songs and put on strong American accents (ie stronger than their normal accents!).

The number two spot last year was taken by the now very popular Bloc Party.

Next on stage was the Arctic Monkeys.
Singer Alex Turner got a louder crowd reception simply by saying "Hello" than the other two bands did by playing their best songs!
This band are now being described as a 'phenomenon' and were almost certainly the most popular band on the bill.
They played all their best songs, and on their three singles, the band could barely be heard as the audience joined in!
The band played very well, but this will probably be the last time they come to Norwich for a good few years!

Last year the Futureheads played in this slot.

The headliners of this years tour were Maximo Park.
It was argued that they should have played before the Arctic Monkeys but it is understandable why they did, as when the tour was announced, the Monkeys had not even released their debut album!
Maximo Park's singer, Paul Smith, is possibly the most energetic person I have ever seen on stage! He was constantly jumping and scissor kicking and dancing with the microphone stand.
The band played all the best songs from their album, their new single and other new songs which most of the audience had not heard before.
Despite the controversy, I was surprised to find myself admitting that Maximo Park were almost certainly the best band on the night (although they have probably had more touring experience!).

Last year, The Killers headlined the NME Tour.

Traditionally, all the bands which feature in the NME Tour benefit greatly from the experience. It would be hard to predict who will benefit more. I would say, however, that by the end of they year, the Mystery Jets will be very much more popular than they are now, as Arctic Monkeys and to a lesser extent Maximo Park are already household names.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah + Dr. Dog

Dr Dog (a five piece from Philidelphia, USA) came to the stage, brimming with confidence, and seemed genuinely pleased to be there.
They played their laid-back folk pop songs really well, and it was possibly the best opening CYHSY could have hoped for.
Two band members shared singing duties (and both wore woolly hats).
I am guessing that the band haven't played many times before in the UK. Inexperienced American bands can get offended by British crowds as we don't always appear excited! This contrasts dramatically from fans across the pond, who often dance about wildly even if they don't really enjoy the song!
However, the band didn't seem too disappointed and played a good show.

After Dr Dog had left, approximately two dozen white balloons were brought on and positioned in various places around the stage. At first this seemed quite unusual, but strategically placed lights made each set of balloons appear to be a different colour!
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are an American band who made clever use of the internet when they first started recording. More details about the band can be found on this site!
The music made by Clap . . . is hard to describe, as it is easiest to describe something by comparing it to something else!
The band were just as confident playing live as Dr Dog were. This is surprising, since their debut album was released only a few weeks ago. However, they have done a large amount of touring in the time as this is the bands second UK tour.
The band were well appreciated by the crowd, especially the few songs that the audience seemed to know!

The question still remains as to whether CYHSY will be as 'big' this year as has been predicted. This gig, in Norwich's second largest venue, sold out about a month before the gig date. It probably would have been upgraded to the larger UEA, but Soulfly were playing there!

Dr Dog have a few albums, but their newest is Easy Beat, released in the UK on Rough Trade.

Bands To Hear

Thought I would include a couple of bands that I think you should hear today.

Both these bands are in the style of poppy, indie bands of the moment, like Franz Ferdinand, Maximo Park et al.

One band have probably the worst haircuts seen on television since the 70's, the other has band members who would look much more at home in a London office block, than on a stage.

So, I present to you, the mulleted Boy Kill Boy

and the not-at-all trendy Young Knives

People keep telling me that Myspace is the way forward.

Any band can put their songs on this website and several other similar ones, and songs become available for millions of people to see and hear at the click of a button.
In fact, in a recent poll in Q Magazine the majority of people who took part suggested that myspace could spell the end for record labels.
However, I am not so sure. With hundreds of label scouts scouring the internet each day looking for fresh talent, myspace could simply be a way of bands attracting labels quicker, cheaper and easier. And for the labels, it could make the whole band discovering malarkey a lot easier. It can even be done from the comfort of ones own home!

So, in the interests of science, I thought I would see how easy it is to find a band worth signing on myspace.

After about 10 minutes I found Bambi and the Vanities who I am fairly sure you may not have heard of before.
This band really do sound quite good, if you can try to ignore the fact that the vocals sound worryingly like the Bravery.
The band are not signed, have only had a few hundred views (which is not a lot by myspace standards), have 4 tracks available for download, and have many famous myspace 'friends' including: Giant Drag; Ladyfuzz; Mystery Jets and Client.

The Pistolas + The Ludes

Saturday 04 February 2006 - Norwich Arts Centre

The Pistolas are a punk band from Norwich who are on the verge of hitting "the big time". They won two awards at the Diesel new music awards for unsigned bands.
It is obvious they have a lot of support in and around Norwich, as they sold out the venue which is one of the largest in the city, and has recently hosted bands such as the Others (supported by the Rakes), Hundred Reasons and the Cooper Temple Clause.

The support band were Londoners, the Ludes. This is not the first time the Ludes have been to the NAC, they supported the Others and the Rakes in January 2005.

The Ludes are a punk band in the same vein as the Strokes and the Libertines. The singer wore a millitary jacket which featured (suspiciously neat) rips and trousers torn at the knees. On one occassion, he picked up a small monitor speaker, stood it on end and sat on it for a song or two, but then he fell off.
The band were not bad. However, the singer was rather arrogant and had an annoying habit of throwing his microphone into the crowd, then jumping in after it. I would be lying if I said that I had not hoped once or twice that his mic may have broken after the impact with the floor or a young fans head.
If I had been able to ignore the singer, I am sure I would have enjoyed the show more. I honestly feel that, had he been glued to the floor and the microphone securely attached to his hand, they would have played a really great set. But they didn't, and I didn't really enjoy it.

The Pistolas appeared on the stage, shrouded in smoke (presumably from a smoke machine, hopefully not from cigarettes) and presented the audience with a fairly awe inspiring set. The music was very good, reminiscent of The Fall and Joy Division, and the lighting effects, which often look tacky in such a small venue, really helped to maintain the atmosphere of suspense which had been created.
The singer, who looked not unlike David Byrne from Talking Heads, mercifully stayed on the stage and did not repeat the antics of the Ludes frontman.
The Pistolas played a blistering set of fairly short punk songs which were often catchy and rarely boring. The band played very well together and had the attitude and performance of seasoned rockers.

It is possible that Ludes may become quite popular. After all, it has happened to similar bands, such as the Paddingtons. However, I would not be willing to put money on it!

I would recommend that you keep an eye out for the Pistolas as after seeing their performance last night, I beleive they will become quite big in the next couple of years.

The Decemberists

The Decemberists are a fairly established band in their homeland USA.
In the UK, however, they are not very well known at all.

Their sound is generally acoustic guitar driven indie rock, but it is hard to compare them to other bands.

Released a year ago, the Decemberists' second album, Her Majesty the Decemberists, was, as these things go, very much the work of someone who can boast both a creative writing degree and a pretty kick-ass book collection. This was an album that you could quite accurately file under "literary pop," and though this very fact would later be used to rib (Colin - singer) Meloy a bit, there is something entirely timeless to what he had managed to create. The songs on Her Majesty didn't just sound like they were penned by great authors, the were actually about great authors, and that pretty much sums up the way they should be perceived.

The band's debut release was Five Songs EP (which had 6 tracks!) and was originally self-released by the band, although it was later reissued on Hush records.

The band have 3 albums to their name, but the newest is Picaresque which is available now on Kill Rock Stars records.

The Decemberists' most recent single is Sixteen Military Wives released again on Kill Rock Stars. They are yet to have a single reach the British top 40.

Kid Carpet

Kid Carpet - real name Ed Patrick (see what he did there?) is a musician with a sense of humour.

He is arguably the best musician who makes music using childrens toys.

OK, so he will never (probably) have a number one single, but this is a loss for the Country.

His music cannot really be described in words, and as I cannot draw, all I can recommend is that you listen to his songs.

Discography
Kid Carpet's debut EP was Sh*t Dope which was released on Slow Graffitti records. This did not reach the charts and is quite hard to find now.

He has released an album Ideas and Oh Dears, released on Tired and Lonesome records which is available now.

The newest single is Carrier Bag released on Tired and Lonesome records. This did not reach the top 40.

Help She Can't Swim

Help She Can't Swim are super indie, punk rockers who scream and shout their way through catchy songs, usually no longer than 3 minutes.

They do sound like Be Your Own PET, a band previously featured on this website.

HSCS always seem to be on tour, yet they always seem to be supporting bands! They have recently been on tour with John Peel favourites, Bearsuit, and are currently on tour with NME sweethearts Test Icicles.

However, despite this, the only coverage the band seem to get are in live reviews, which, although often supportive, are rarely glowing.

The bands only album got a mixed reception with the music press.

Discography
Help She Can't Swim's debut release was the EP Committing Social Suicide, which was released on Fantastic Plastic records.

A couple of singles have been released by the band, but nothing reached the charts.

The bands album Fashonista Super Dance Troupe was again released on Fantastic Plastic records.

The Duels

I first heard of the Duels when I saw them support the Rakes recently.
They played a very good set and appeared to be very confident.

The band are the only band currently signed to Nude records - a label who were once home to Suede and The Jennifers (who later became Supergrass)!

Their music sounds in places like David Bowie, but on their myspace site, they compare themselves to Pink Floyd, The Kinks, The Pretty Things, The Smiths, The Adverts and The Stranglers!

Although they are yet to be really noticed by the music press, they are supporting Hard-Fi on the NME Brats tour at Londons Hammersmith Palais.

The band rely on the cost effective "word of mouth" to make their name known. They have a surprisingly large 'Street Team' (a group of people who spread the word on bands in exchange for free gig tickets and promotional goodies) which can be joined via their website (below).

Discography
The bands debut single Potential Futures was released on Nude Records but failed to chart.

Their second single Pressure on You was again released on Nude Records and again failed to reach the top 40.

Jim Noir

Jim Noir is a singer/songwriter from Manchester whos' music is causing "quite a stir" at the moment.

Although there is no doubting his music talent, it is hard also to miss the comedy element of some of his tracks.

His website (see below) is also rather amusing!

Jim's music is very poppy. Some of his songs sound like Brendan Benson and some sound not unlike the Kaiser Chiefs!

Discography
Jim's debut release was the EP Eanie Meanie which was released on My Dad recordings. This did not reach the top 40.

After two more EP's, My Patch and A Quiet Man, Noir releases his debut album The Tower of Love which was released on My Dad recordings.

Also, look out for the single Key of C which is due to be released in the next couple of months.

Louis XIV

Louis XIV are a four-piece band from San Diego, California.

The band have only released two singles so far, yet they have suddenly gained a fairly large following in the UK.

They sound a little like The White Stripes but they may have a little more in common with The Dandy Warhols, with their raw punky sound.

The band caused controversy in America, as their album cover for the Best Little Secrets are Kept showed a naked woman from behind, and was the first album in history to feature a parental advisory warning for the artwork on the album cover!

Discography
The bands first release was the Illegal Tender EP released on Pineapple records. This did not chart as only 500 were made!

The first proper single was Finding Out True Love is Blind which was released on Pineapple records. Again this did not reach the top 40.

The bands newest single is Pledge of Allegiance, again on Pineapple, which has not charted but is currently still in some shops.

Louis XIV have one album The Best Little Secrets are Kept, released on Pineapple records.

Cord are a band from Norwich who have recently signed a 5 album deal with Island records, home of U2.

The band are tipped for big things, and were championed by Radio One DJ Steve Lamacq among others.

They were first noticed by record label scouts at a gig at London's Water Rats venue, and a bidding war started between East West, Sony and Island to snap up the band.

The band say they chose Island as they were the label most interested in the bands music, and they were willing to allow the band to stay in Norwich.

Cord's influences are many and varied.
They have a Radiohead/Coldplay side, but many of their songs have a more progressive side, like Muse.
Their songs are all very different though, which can only be a good thing!

The Cloud Room

The Cloud Room aren't really like many other bands.

Some of their songs are quite Coldplay/Radiohead esque. But a lot are more dancey.

They describe themselves as Rock/Indie/Pop, which doesn't really narrow it down much more!

No one in the music press has really picked up on this band. Which is a shame really.
Clash magazine featured their song Hey Now Now on their recent free CD: One's to Watch For 2006. Which was nice of them.
But still, not a lot.

Discography
The Cloud Room have released a single Waterfall which was released on Gigantic records. It didn't make it to the top 40.

The band also have a self titled album which was also released on Gigantic records.

Dirty Pretty Things

I'm going to do a bit more bandwagon jumping (on to) here.

This is partially because they have recently announced a UK tour.

Dirty Pretty Things are a "super group" although they do not use the term themselves.

The bands members are:
Carl Barat from the Libertines
Anthony Rossomando (who replaced Pete in a few of the Libertines later live shows)
Didz Hammond from the Cooper Temple Clause, and
Gary Powell, also from the Libertines.

The band have already received a lot of support from the NME, who championed the Libertines from the start.

The bands shows have been selling out very quickly as the venues they have chosen are "intimate" (small).

Discography
The band are yet to release anything, but Bang Bang, You're Dead is tipped to be the first release.

The band have also recorded a large quantity of their album.

Be Your Own PET

Another American band, Be Your Own PET are quite different from anyone else that you are likely to hear at the moment.

They are pure punk rock. Yet the female singer helps to give the songs a slightly popier feel than most punk.

There are many factors which define punk. One is the length of the tracks. Radio stations in the 70's traditionally allowed songs 3 minutes of air time. If a song was longer than this, it would almost certainly not be played. Punk songs were almost always shorter than this, usually about 2 minutes long - probably an attempt to combat the authority of the radio stations.
Be Your Own PET, however, have taken this principle to new extremes. Their newest single, Lets Get Sandy is an epic of a track, coming in at about 55 seconds!

Discography
Be Your Own PET have a fairly large back catalogue.

Their debut track was Damn, Damn Leash which is arguably their most popular track. It was released on Infinity Cat records but did not reach the top 40.

A few releases later, and still no top 40 single, we reach Be Your Own PET's newest release Lets Get Sandy, again released on Infinity Cat records. The single was released in the UK on the 23rd January.

Also, the band have a self titled debut album which is due to be released in March.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

The world record time for writing "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah" is 3 minutes 9 seconds like that (with capitals) and 2 minutes 25 seconds all lower case.
Therefore, from now on, they will either be known as "CYHSY" or just "Clap".

CYHSY are the ultimate "indie" band.
These Americans originally released their debut album without the help of a record label! They sold 20,000 copies through their website, by word-of-mouth alone! Eventually however, demand became too large and they signed deals on both sides of the Atlantic (in the UK with Witchita, who also signed Bloc Party).

CYHSY are making waves, with the NME enjoying their work and even Rolling Stone (who don't usually seem so quick to recognise new bands) singing their praises.

Their debut single Is This Love? was a vinyl only release on Witchita records.

The self titled debut album is available on Witchita records in the UK now.

Arctic Monkeys

OK, I will have to jump on the bandwagon here. I really have no choice!

The Arctic Monkeys are definitely the hottest band in Britain at the moment. Everything they touch turns to gold. And the average age of the band members' ends in 'teen'.

The singles that have been released all have super-catchy, instantly recognisable riffs, and lyrics which show wisdom well beyond their years! They are also almost the exact opposite of what the 'indie' youth look for in a favourite band. They wear Adidas (*shock*) and the singer wears his guitar high enough so that if you cared to, you could see his belt buckle below it!

Why are they so popular? Well no one knows for sure (Perhaps it would be better if we did - then there would be no X-factor) but it could be the way that the audience empathises with the band, rather than the band sympathising with the audience. No one has managed it that well since Oasis. The Libertines tried, but for all their pretences, they were fairly upper-class.

The Others (the band fronted by the ever controversial Dominic Masters) attempted it, but with their song lyrics "This is for the poor, not you rich kids" they lost a large amount of support from middle and upper class fans. When it is (fairly) common knowledge that the middle classes are the ones who usually buy indie music, you'd surely have to be pretty stupid to mock them?

Anyway, leave that to the psychologists. Enjoy the music!

The Arctic Monkeys first release was the super saught-after 5 Minutes With the Arctic Monkeys which featured the very popular track Fake Tales of San Francisco.
If you have 5 Minutes With . . . on CD or vinyl, then I suggest you visit eBay. They are selling on there now for about £80!
The single/EP was released on Bang Bang records - a label the Monkeys made up just to release the single!

The second release was their most famous track I Bet That You Look Good On the Dancefloor to which the response was over-whelming. The single was released on Domino records (home of Franz Ferdinand) and shot straight to number one!

The bands latest release was When the Sun Goes Down. Many people suggested that a song about prostitutes would not be accepted by the British public. They were wrong. The single was released on Domino records and, again, shot straight to number one.

The bands album What Ever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was released on Domino Records and quickly became the best selling debut album of all time, outselling the previous best HearSay's Popstars by more than 50,000 copies in its first week!

This band has just recently come to my attention.

However, it is immediately obvious that they are really quite good!

They, like many other bands at the moment, mix keyboards with guitars well, but these guys are a bit poppier than, say, the Killers. Or maybe I just mean happier?!

Hot Chip's debut release is the Mexico EP released on Victory Gardens records. It is very hard to find and did not make the top 40.

The bands newest offering is in the form of not-yet-released single Over and Over. I am certain that this will be their best selling single yet, and will probably be their first to make the top 40. It will be released on Moshi Moshi records soon.

I really like this band!

They sound like a 50's rock'n'roll band, and they present all their releases as though they are from the 50's (although they are released on CD as well as vinyl!).

They really have to be heard to be beleived!

Discography
Their debut single On My Own backed with B-Side Baby is a real example of their rock'n'roll style. It was released on Smoking Gun records but was so limited edition that it completely failed to touch the charts.

Their second release was a double A side single Blue Boy and The Boy Who Killed Time which was released on Young and Lost Club records, but again was a very limited run of just 500 CD's and 500 7" records so didn't hit the top 40.

Yeti

Yeti's frontman is John Hassall who played Bass in the Libertines - a sort of neo punk band who's two albums received huge critical acclaim, but then singer/guitarist Pete Doherty infamously "went off the rails" and was kicked out of the band.
If you like the Libertines - then great, Yeti won't disappoint. If you don't like the Libertines - don't be put off - they are different. In some cases, they sound very much like the Beatles, and John is a surprisingly good singer.

Yeti have gone quiet recently. Yes, their website is still being updated, but it's been a while since the last release. In an interview with Clash magazine, the head of Moshi Moshi records (Yeti's label) listed all the bands on the label who they were expecting big things from, and also all the bands which were releasing albums in 2006.
The word 'Yeti' did not appear in this interview. Could it be possible that the band the band are changing labels? After all, Pete Doherty's band Babyshambles released their first single on High Society records, only to move to Rough Trade, home of the Libertines. Could Yeti perhaps do the same?

Discography
Yeti's debut was the single Never Loose Your Sense of Wonder which slipped onto HMV's shelves and off again, as discreetly as anything. However, it was a cracking tune and was much appreciated by fans. The B and C sides were just as good making it a classic single. The single, released on Moshi Moshi records reached 36th in the charts in April 2005.

Their second release came in the form of Keep Pushing On which was just not as catchy as the debut and didn't trouble the charts.

The Little Flames

Right.

First up we have the wonderful Little Flames all the way from Liverpool!

They have recently been touring with Dead 60's and the Zutons, who are both top bands and also both come from Liverpool.

Discography
The Little Flames' debut release, Good Bye Little Rose was played by a few Radio One DJ's and has also been spotted on MTV 2. However, it got little recognition in the written music press. Goodbye Little Rose was release on Deltasonic records, but did not enter the top 40.

Their second single, Put Your Dukes Up John was quite popular, and even appeared on a free NME CD (The Soundtrack of Your Summer) which was given away with the magazine at the end of September 2005. This single was again released on Deltasonic and again failed to enter the charts.

There is also a Japan only EP by the band which is very hard to come by and in my opinion, not really worth the large sums paid for it by fans, for it has tracks from the two singles listed above, and two live tracks (which are on iTunes for 79p each)!
